Sales Tips

Cleaning Up Your Inventory

If you take a proactive approach and are willing to make some deals you can move inventory out the door.

Start the process of cleaning out your inventory by sending a direct mail offer to your customer base.

Keep in mind that co-op often covers direct mail costs.

We've found that often times 10 percent of a store's customers will account for 90 percent of its business. Armed with that statistic, you should make a great effort at approaching the groups in your area that are already making bulk buys. Maybe it's the nearby trap club or a pheasant farm. Give them a discount when they buy large volumes of ammunition.

Spring usually means it's banquet season, too. It's a good idea to contact your local chapter of Ducks Unlimited and work with them on clearing out your inventory of waterfowl loads.

  • Advertise in your local newspaper.
  • Print up cards/flyers that your cashiers can slip into the bags of shoppers.
  • Change the hold music at your store to advertise the clearance sale.
  • Finally, make sure your staff mentions the upcoming sale when they finish up their conversations with customers on other sales.

Put up clear signage that directs them to the clearance bins in your store.

With these bins, set up two price tags -- one with the standard price and one that features a "red hot" sales price.
