Selling Smart

Performance. It's what our products are about. And we suspect that your customers are about performance, too. After all, with the sport of hunting you have to make every moment count.

That's why it is so important to emphasize with your customers that they can't "buy cheap" when purchasing their ammunition or any hunting accessories. There are so few chances out in the field for the average hunter. They need to make them count.

  1. Place a sign in your ammunition department that says: "We can find any ammunition you need! See store manager for ordering details."
  2. Next to the cash register, have a display of .22 ammo.
  3. With each firearm purchase, as the consumer is filling out the ATF 4473, bring two boxes of Premium ammo to the counter.
  4. Be sure to change your end-cap displays at least once a quarter. Your end-cap displays should only include high-margin or high-volume items.
  5. Take a trip to the nearest regional chain and mart store. Study their displays, product mix, and atmosphere.
  6. Get involved with your local chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, Whitetails Unlimited, etc.
  7. Educate all employees all the time.
  8. Product giveaways -- Be sure to have a registration form for something free during peak seasons. A free pair of binoculars or a cleaning kit. Through registration you will have the name and address of all your frequent customers to target with future promotions. And be sure to get their e-mail address.
  9. It is a good idea to have gift certificates to your store available.
